Kinect hacked - Open source drivers.
"Adafruit Industries, has recently set a competition offering $1,000 to anyone who could develop a set of open source drivers for Kinect. And when Microsoft voiced its disapproval Adafruit increased the bounty to $2,000 and then even to $3,000. Hector Martin was the first to successfully complete the challenge; in fact he got Kinect working on his Linux laptop using OpenGL in just three hours after its launch. Hector also says that he is going to spend the prize money on more impressive hacking equipment to continue his work."
tl;dr: Spanish computer engineering student developed open source drivers for Kinect. Robotics, education, art are some of the possibilities for this. This seriously kicks ass.

In b4 Microsoft presses charges of some sort for "lost revenue."
Seriously, that kind of shit only helps increase sales, when people can use it the way THEY want to, instead of the way Microsoft tells you to. They're dumb.

some of the stuff that is being done with it is amazing though. One guy made a "Minority Report" style interactive pc set-up with it.

That's the point, the possibilities are practically endless with this, specially for education, and Microsoft is using it for dumb virtual pet games.

There's a very good chance it wasn't invented by Microsoft then. They probably licensed technology from another company entirely.
In all of Microsoft's history, they've never been the leaders of innovation - everything they've done, someone else has already done - they just know how to market it better.
A good example is Windows 95 - Mac OS, anyone?
